What Is Texas Holey Rock And How Is It Used?
Texas Holey Rocks, as most keepers of African Cichlid are aware, serve as a buffer to help maintain water hardness and alkalinity in aquariums. Water and chemical sculpturing of this rock has occured over eons by nature, resulting in the presence of large and small holes, caves and crevices that, when placed in aquariums or terrariums, are perfect protection and play areas for fish and marine animals of all types. Because of their holey nature these rocks vary greatly in weight for a given size rock, and average around 0.027-0.030 pounds per cubic inch. Texas Holey Rock comes from a large limestone formation that was formed over the eons in a specific limited location in the Hill Country of central Texas.
Texas Holey Rock is very hard to come by, and national retail and wholesale distributors are extremely low in stock if they can find it at all. Many of the rock providers have gone out of business or sold off their property to housing developers. Because of this scarcity, Texas Holey Rock is now selling for around $3 to $8 a pound in pet shops and aqaurium dealers. Prices will probably continue to rise in the upcoming months because of the low numbers of field finds across the Hill Country collection areas.
Is Texas Holey Rock A Common Item?
No. Not at all. But it is very much sought after. Texas Holey Rock can only be found in certain sections of the Texas Hill Country, northwest of Austin, Texas. And the supply is limited because of the great amount of physical labor involved in harvesting, cleaning, and preparing the rock. At present Holey Rock is in very short supply at most retail shops and that influences pricing.
How does Texas Holey Rock Balance Alkalinity?
The limestone nature of Holey Rock allows very slow release of alkaline material into the aquarium water. Normal water changes and cleaning keep the buildup from becoming excessive.
Will Holey Rock Kill Off My Tropical Fish?
No. Texas Holey Rock is used in all types of aquariums, both fresh and saltwater. If your fish can withstand pH levels of between 7 and 8.5 they will not be affected. Of course this assumes regular cleaning and water changes.
Are all Holey Rocks The Same?
Absolutely not. That is one of the attractive features of Texas Holey Rock. Each rock has it's own hole pattern, hole size and shape, rock structure and basic rock color. Colors range from slightly gray to brilliant bone white, and many have faint pink, red, black, and tan color patterns running through them that are highlighted under aquarium lights.
Are There Other Uses For Texas Holey Rocks?
Sure! People are using them for terrariums, snake houses, fountains, waterfalls, table decorations, candle holders, doorstops, planters, landscaping, and even jewelry (the smaller ones of course). And Texas Holey Rock has become an art form in many parts of the country. Because of the unusual creation method in nature, many Holey Rocks take on a resemblance to common items. This can be compared to cloud formations looking like animals or other objects. (When such a piece is found it is offered as a Decorative Rock and demands higher pricing.) Their use is only limited by your imagination.
How Many Holey Rocks Should Be Used?
Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder when it comes to Texas Holey Rocks. In an aquarium environment some keepers and breeders want the entire tank to be filled with rock. Lights can be installed to create gorgeous patterns of various colors and hues throughout the tank. Others use only a minimum amount of rock simply to maintain proper pH levels. On average, 25-30% of the volume of an aquarium is filled with rock. Any more than that may become a safety hazard due to weight and/or shifting of the rocks.
In landscaping a different approach is normally taken. Holey Rocks are distributed with larger rocks located at the front of a landscape site and smaller rocks spread out towards the rear. Of course, there are those who prefer to set the scene in the exact reverse order. It really just comes down to personal opinion.
