Imagine the scene, if you will. You are driving down a road and are jamming out to music or simply daydreaming about the long journey ahead. All of a sudden, one of your tires blows out. As you slow to a stop by lifting off the gas (not applying the brakes) it dawns on you that you will need to switch out one wheel for the spare. Here is a quick guide to switching out that busted wheel for a different one.

1. Firstly, make sure that you are far enough to the side of the road. If you have to, try and set up a warning back up the road if you have to, and also put on your flashers.

2. Your car should have a jack in it for emergency situations just like this. Find that, take it out and look under your car. Depending on the wheel that you need to replace, there should be exposed metal parts of the frame under the doors that you need to place the jack under.

3. Get out your tool bag that contains a wheel nut wrench. This is to be attached to the wheel nuts. Once attached, you should loosen all of the bolts. This makes it easier for you to dislodge the wheel once it is off the ground and so that you have more leverage to actually get the wheel nuts loose.

4. Once loose, you can do that for all the wheel nuts on that wheel, just make sure to not take them off. Keep them on so that once lifted, the wheel doesn't come off the hub.

5. Start to jack up your car on the metal frame. Make sure that you jack the car up enough so that the wheel you want to remove is completely off the ground.

6. You can now remove the nuts. Then, reach behind the wheel and tap on the top of it to get it off the studs.

7. Place it to the side and put the new wheel up on the studs. Once it is on, you can put the nuts onto the studs and tighten them by hand. After those have been reattached, you can start to tighten them using the tire iron. Make sure to tighten the nut across from the one that you did before. Make a star pattern if you can. Don't tighten the nut directly next to the one you did before.

8. Release the jack and let the car come back to the ground. Once it has settled on the suspension, you can go back and tighten all of the nuts one more time to make sure they are on nice and tight.

9. After storing your other wheel and the tools, you can continue on your way.

Most cars don't have the luxury of a full-size spare. If your car does, you won't have to be speed restricted. Just know that if you do have to use a spare that is speed restricted, to adhere to that speed. You wouldn't want to have another blow out on your Mustang wheels.
