Honda Insight Rockets to No. 1 in Japan
Honda's Insight was Japan's best-selling vehicle in April 2008. Sales of the Insight totaled 10,481 cars. The 1.89 million yen price (approximately $18,900.00) combined with saving the planet, money on gasoline, and money on taxes helped to make the Insight the first hybrid car in Japan to rank at No. 1 in monthly sales.
Koji and Emiko Suzuki had wanted a Prius from Toyota for some years, but they just didn't want to spend that much money on a car. Koji was concerned about the sinking economy reducing his income and Emiko made very little working the cash register at Save On, the convenience store near their small home. When they went to their local Honda dealers, they were actually thinking about buying a smaller car.
They had their eye on the Honda Fit, which was ranked No. 2 behind the Insight. The Fit is considered a full-size car in Japan and is not included in the minicar category. Honda sold 9,443 Fits in April. A white demo Insight was parked at the door as Koji and Emiko walked into the Honda dealers with three-year-old Koichi in tow. White is the most common car color in Japan. Koichi immediately saw the hole between the hatchback section and the back seat, which was created by dropping half of the back seat down, and wanted to crawl through.
The salesman insisted he go ahead and started to tell Koji and Emiko all the virtues of the Insight including the tax rebate, great mileage of 30 km a liter (113.55 miles a gallon), and how they would help to save the planet. The salesperson concluded that the Insight offered lots of storage space and room for their family to grown. Koji, Emiko, and Koichi took a test drive. The car did accelerate reasonably considering the mileage and handled just like most other Japanese cars. And it was under the important 2 million yen barrier, unlike the Prius.
The Prius languished 20 places lower in 21st place in April due to the 2.33 million yen (approximately $23,300.00) price and people waiting for the release of the new Prius. Industry insiders speculate that Toyota will price the new Prius at ¥2.05 million to compete with Honda.
The salesperson saw that Koji and Emiko were seriously thinking about the car. He offered to throw in a free sound system. After all, the profit on the Insight has to be much higher than the profit on a Fit. And the sound systems probably cost Honda very little. Koji and Emiko signed a contract to buy an Insight, a white one of course.
Across Japan, from Okinawa in the south to Hokkaido in the North, people just like Koji and Emiko are buying environmentally friendly cars like the Insight. Optimists refer to people wanting to do the right thing and reduce the ecological burden on our planet. Cynics laugh and refer to the power of government tax breaks and subsidies, the affordability of environmentally friendly cars, and savings at the pump combined with the high gas prices last year.
People may not specifically remember gas prices hitting 185.10 yen (approximately $1.71) on August 6, 2008, but people do remember the pain at the pump. With one gallon containing 3.785 liters that resulted in gas costing approximately $6.47 dollars a gallon in Japan in 2008. Koji and Emiko though the Insight was a good answer.
Yuichi, Koji's brother, laughed when he heard what they bought: "Boring!" Yuichi is shopping for a new sports car. He can't find anything he likes that is affordable. Sources inside Honda say that Honda will be releasing a sporty version of the Insight in 2010 at a very reasonable price. Yuichi is not sure if he will buy one, but he will test drive it at the very least. After all, as the Honda salesman told Koji and Emiko, environmentally friendly cars are the future.

Honda Prelude $122.67 The Honda Prelude is a sports coupe produced by Japanese automaker Honda from 1978 until 2001. The twodoor coupe spanned five generations and was discontinued upon the release of the fifthgeneration Honda Integra or Acura RSX TypeS in North America in late 2001 as well as the release of the Honda S2000 in early 2000, due to its decreasing sales and popularity. In the U.S. auto market, the sixthgeneration and subsequent Accord Coupes became the de facto replacement for the Prelude. The Preludes perennial competitor has been the Toyota Celica, another straight4powered coupe introduced several years prior to the Prelude. Throughout the 1980s, the Prelude was challenged by the Nissan Silvia, Isuzu Impulse, Mitsubishi FTO, Mitsubishi Cordia, Ford Probe and Mazda MX6. Out of all of these contemporaries, the Eclipse is the only one remaining car in production. Honda Civic $144.98 The Honda Civic is a line of compact cars developed and manufactured by Honda. In North America, the Civic is the secondlongest continuouslyrunning nameplate from a Japanese manufacturer; only the Toyota Corolla, introduced in 1968, has been in production longer. The Civic, along with the Accord and Prelude, comprised Hondas vehicles sold in North America until the 1990s, when the model lineup was expanded. Having gone through several generational changes, the Civic has become larger and more upmarket, and it currently slots between the Fit and Accord. It was introduced in July 1972 as a twodoor coupe, followed by a threedoor hatchback that September. With the transverse engine mounting of its 1169 cc engine and frontwheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Early models of the Civic were typically outfitted with a basic AM radio, heater, foamcushioned plastic trim, twospeed wipers and painted steel rims with a chromed wheel nut cap. Honda Elysion by Avery, Iustinus Tim [Paperback] $76.47 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Honda Elysion is a minivan capable of seating up to 8 people that is sold only in Japan as a competitor to the Toyota Alphard and the Nissan Elgrand. It is related to the USAspec Honda Odyssey but is not the same vehicle. One of the major differences from the previous generation JDM Honda Odyssey was that the rear doors were exchanged to sliding doors typically used on minivans, whereas the JDM Odyssey used conventional side doors, found on MPVs. The USAspec Honda Odyssey, known in Japan as the Honda LaGreat, was too large for Japan, so the Elysion took many styling cues from the LaGreat and used them on a smaller vehicle. This Is How It Starts $10.99 Meet Taylor Mark: a recent college graduate who has moved to Washington, D.C., to work for John Grayson, the less-than-brilliant congressman from his home district in southern California. Inadequately prepared for life among D.C.'s movers and shakers, Taylor quickly learns that Washington is a city where deals are made behind closed doors. And there's no one better to teach him -- and Grayson -- that lesson than Chase Latham, Taylor's former college roommate and the son of a powerful lobbyist. To Chase, the Beltway's bars, restaurants, town houses, and government offices are one big, debauched playground -- a land of milk and honey where secrets are currency, the sex is bipartisan, and rules and boundaries are obsolete. It's a place where, as the stakes are raised, the line between right and wrong becomes blurred and friends' loyalties are nothing more than fragments of the past. This Is How It Starts is an incisively written debut novel about how far one postcollegiate idealist will go to be an insider in a town that is unyielding in what it will take from a person in exchange for granting him a margin of knowledge and power. |

Starts with One, It $34.99 Today, virtually every organization faces massive change. Unfortunately, change is extraordinarily difficult, and most attempts to initiate and sustain it fail. In It Starts with One , J. Stewart Black and Hal B Gregersen identify the core problem: changing individuals and the “mental maps” inside their heads must happen before you can change the organization. Just as actual maps guide people’s footsteps, mental maps guide daily behavior. Successful strategic change for the organization is all about changing individual mental maps and behaviors first, because they are the organization. To change organizations, you must break through your own brain barrier—and help those around you do the same. One step at a time, It Starts with One shows how to do that: how to create new destinations, and new, more inspiring effective paths to sustainable change. Black and Gregersen systematically identify the brain barriers that stand in your way: failure to see, failure to move, and failure to finish. Drawing on their extensive experience consulting with world-class organizations, they offer integrated tools, strategies, and solutions for overcoming each of these obstacles. This edition offers even more effective tools, more guidance on leading change in globalizing environments, and more insight into changing your own mental maps...liberating yourself to transform your entire organization. Overcoming the failure to see Why organizations miss obvious market transformations—and what to do about it Breaking through the failure to move Why people fail to change even when they see the need—and how to break through this barrier Conquering the failure to finish Why change “stalls out” and how to maintain the momentum Anticipating change Why too often people let the need to change become a crisis before acting—to build to a crisis before acting—and how to create the capability to anticipate change, move when needed, and finish in the future without “being told” To Change the Organization, First Change the Individual. To Change the Individual, Read This Book! Seventy percent of organizations that seek strategic change fail. Organizations can’t change because individuals don’t change. Individuals don’t change because powerful mental maps stand in their way. This book offers a powerful, start-to-finish strategy for helping people redraw their mental maps—and unleash their power to deliver superior, sustained strategic change. Thoroughly updated with new techniques, case studies, and examples, this book offers even more valuable insights for today’s leaders and managers. Among the highlights: a detailed new discussion of how you must change in order to lead change…new guidance on leading change in global e |
