Start Securing a New Job

Securing a new job - particularly if it’s your very first job - can be somewhat of a daunting experience. What sorts of questions will they ask you in your interview? Will they require you to perform any unexpected tasks? And how long will it take before they notify you of your interview results - assuming, of course, that they notify you at all. These are all valid questions that are likely to run through the head of anyone getting ready to apply for a new job. So wouldn’t it be great if there was a straightforward guide to applying for the jobs you wanted?

The good news is; there often is. Many companies dedicate a portion of their website to educating prospective employees about the company, outlining what they’re looking for in candidates, describing their graduate schemes and what their recruitment processes entail. Any such resource is highly valuable in applying for a job with a specific company, as it relays to the applicant exactly what the company expects out of any future employees.

However, if a company does not happen to display any such guidelines, it is acceptable to contact a representative of the company to ask them if they have any special requirements or requests with regard to applications. If they do, take careful note and adhere to any suggestions that they give you. However, if they don’t impart any information, it’s still worth brushing up - or introducing yourself to - job application tools and guides.

For instance, there are countless guides out there on how to write cover letters and CVs, as well as on the most common types of questions employers ask in interviews - you can even practice in a mock interview with a selection of common interview questions. However, one thing to always keep in mind is that you should read up on every company that you apply with. Chances are, interviewers will ask you a few questions to gauge how much you know about the company - and it always looks better if you’ve done your research.

Interviewers will usually tell you how long you might expect to wait before hearing back from them. But unless they have specifically asked applicants not to contact them after interviews, it’s standard protocol to follow up with a letter. More than anything, a letter should thank the interviewer for their time and notify them that you look forward to their response. It’s also a great way to reinforce any impression you made on your interviewer during such recruitment programmes.

So, while applying and interviewing for a job might seem like a stressful experience, keep in mind that there are many useful resources available to help you.
