Choosing a car seat

Having a baby for the first time means having to learn a lot quickly. As a parent safety becomes paramount for your little one. This article will try to help you as a parent make the right decicion when it comes to buying a car seat.

Ok the first thing to find out is if you want an Isofix car seat OR a belt in car seat. All new cars will have Isofix available. Isofix is a connection in the boot of your car which has receiving ends in order to fit an Isofix car seat. The Isofix car seat has two bars sticking out at the back which feed through the back rest of the back seats. These bars then connect into the receiving ends of the Isofix connections in the boot. All car seats will have guidelines regarding fitting of the seat and should be carefully read over to ensure the seat is fixed correctly. There are two different versions of Isofix car seats, a base Isofix car seat, or a direct Isofix car seat. A base Isofix car seat is a car seat base which fits into the Isofix connection. The car seat is then clicked in or out of the base when required. A direct Isofix car seat is a car seat which connects directly to the Isofix connections in the boot. This is more of a permanent seat for infants over the age of 9 months.

If your car does not have Isofix connection, then there are some alternative solutions. Most infant car seats can be fixed in using the seat belt. Again manufacturers guidelines will need to be read thoroughly in order to fit the seat correctly.

Another alternative is to use a a belt in base. This enables you to fit the base onto the seat using the seat belt. Then the car seat can be clicked into position onto the base when required.
