Im sure you can all agree with me from one experience or another, when i say i hate overtaking on a normal road. Motorways, fine, but two way roads make me shiver at the thought of coming across a tractor or slow moving OAP granny behind a wheel.

The reasons are twofold: half the time i do not believe in my car enough to risk overtaking someone and have something appear in the other direction, the second being that i am really indecisive.The thought of calling to claim on my Car Insurance also puts the fear of god in me!

The answer to my prayers, it seems, has come from and automotive supplier called Continental, which analyses the proximity of oncoming vehicles and helps mere mortals like me to decide whether it is worth it or not.   It does this by using video and radar sensors, and communicates with the driver with an optical warning message, vibrating accelerator pedal and acoustic spoken warning.  So it pretty much jiggles, flashes and shouts at you should it feel you are making the wrong decision.  If these warnings do not stop you from trying an Evel Kenievel like act, the system intervenes, activating the braking system and slowing the vehicle down so that the driver has time to pull in behind its target before getting driven off the road by oncoming traffic.

The firm have formulated this as misjudging manoeuvres can have fatal consequences, and at best, inflate Car Insurance premiums for everyone else.

The department of transport advises, to reduce the risk of accidents, that drivers do not attempt to overtake anyone travelling near or at the speed limit, and to avoid overtaking on bends, despite whether or not the road appears clear.

I don't know about you, but i think i may just carry on tutting in my car as i proceed slowly behind the lorry, dreaming of overtaking and reaching my destination that little bit faster.
