Motorcycle Safety

Motorcyclist safety is a topic that deserves some extra special attention. The fatality rate per kilometer is higher for motorbike riders when compared to automobilists. This means that the number of fatalities because of a motorcycle crash is relatively higher than fatal car crashes per distance unit travelled. Approximately 80 percent of the motorcycle crashes result in injury or death, while this is only 20 percent for car drivers. The main reason of this big difference can be found in the fact that a motorcycle doesn't provide any protection for its driver. To counter this the motorcycle rider can use personal protective equipment (PPE or motorbike gear) such as helmets and protective clothing which will help to reduce serious injuries.

Some of the most common motorcycle injuries are:

• Concussion and brain damage by the impact of an object or another vehicle in the face during a crash. By wearing a helmet the risk of death can be reduced by thirty seven percent.
• Breaking joints (spine, fingers, wrist, elbow, neck, shoulder, knees)
• Skin and muscle damage (road rash) by sliding over the surface at high speed. This can almost completely be eliminated by the use of proper protective clothing (leather jacket, pants)
• By keeping some good tips in mind and by wearing the proper protective clothing the motorcyclist safety will be improved and the grade of injuries can drastically be reduced.

 

Many of these injuries can be reduced or even avoided when using the proper protective clothing such as leather jackets, boots, pants, gloves and helmet.
