A collaboration, in 1938, between Harley Earl and Charles Chayne on the Buick Y-Job dream car lead to the creation of other imaginative Buick concept cars later on. Vehicles that were the result of a long-term, cooperative venture between GM Styling and Buick Engineering. By the early 50's, this pair of giants in American automotive design created two new forward thinking show cars, LeSabre and XP-300. It's the Buick XP-300 that was the experiment in styling and engineering conceived and developed by Charles Chayne, a GM executive engineer and head of Buick Engineering at the time.
The XP-300 was a clean design execution of a two seat ragtop. At 16 feet long and 80 inches wide, it floated only 6.5 inches off the ground. Her overall appearance reflects the long and low styling trend, favored by auto designers and car customizers in the 50's. The body, with its beautiful lines and skirted rear wheels, creates the illusion of graceful speed at rest. Body pieces are welded to the frame underpinnings making it all one solid unit. Unique design accents were first seen on this concept car and would eventually be borrowed for later designs of production models. She sported tailfins; uncommon in 1951 but all the rage by the end of that decade. She had long ribbed chrome side moldings and a rear deck spear that ended in a third brake light shaped much like a jet's afterburner. More than a sports car, the XP-300 represents the stunning attitude of a personal / executive concept vehicle more along the lines of the much later Thunderbird, Mercedes SL convertible series or even the modern Buick Reatta.
To think that this dream car was all show and no go would make you very wrong. Like her sister the Lesabre concept, the XP-300 was well endowed with a 216 cubic inch, supercharged OHV V-8 Buick engine which could generate 335 horsepower at 5500 RPM. It ran on a steady diet of methanol/gasoline fuel. Coupled to this impressive powerplant was an automatic transmission. None other than Charles Chayne, himself, drove the XP-300 to more than 140 miles per hour during an engineering shake down run.
Other unique engineering features for this car were push-button seats and windows (including convertible rear windows). The beautiful long hood was also opened and closed remotely from the cockpit by push-button. It was hinged at the front and dramatically swung upwards from the rear, at the base of the windshield using hydraulics. The suspension sported such novel features as power jacks that were operated from the driver's seat and a responsive braking system featuring extra wide brake drums that allowed for a double set of brake shoes.
Having seen old black and white footage of this awesome example of concept car art from the 50's, I can truthfully say that still pictures do not do it justice. Today, the white XP-300 resides in the collection of the Sloan Museum in Flint Michigan. If you are ever out that way, taking a side trip to go view it and the rest of the Sloan's cars is well worth your effort. To view the old show footage I've seen is also very rewarding.
