How to Reduce False Alarms in your Home Security System

If you invested in a home alarm system to protect your house, it can be very frustrating if all of your money was spent just to produce a number of obnoxious false alarms. There are a number of causes can be easily avoided as long as you take the time for proper installation and using up to date technology that is less susceptible to false alarms caused by pets and other non-intruders.

 

Most false alarms are not caused by faulty alarm systems at all but rather by the homeowner inputting the wrong access code. If you press the wrong number on accident, input an incomplete code or forget your code altogether, the security system assumes that you are a burglar trying to bypass it.

 

The best solution to this problem is to choose a code that is easy for you to memorize but not easy for an intruder to guess. Keep in mind that a burglar could potentially be someone you know, so it's a good idea to stray away from numbers that represent birthdays or anniversaries. If you're certain that you have no enemies and you have a particularly bad memory, you could potentially fall back on one of these options. Whatever code you choose, never write it down and keep it in your purse or wallet as it can make its way into the wrong hands and put you and your home in danger.

 

Another option is to get a remote arm/disarm button that you can keep on your keychain. All you need to do is remember to lock your doors when you leave and then you can arm/disarm your alarm system as soon as you exit and right before you enter your house. This has been proven to be a very effective way of significantly reducing the number of false alarms created.

 

Kids and pets are another potential source of false alarms. To avoid false alarms caused by children, make sure not to place motion detectors in places like the path between their bedroom and the bathroom that they may often find themselves at night. As far as pets go, you can either choose to keep them locked up in a room for the night or purchase a more advanced motion detector with pet-immunity.

 

Other false alarms may occur due to faulty installation, such as perimeter alarms that are located too close to the curb where people may set it off by accident when walking by. Make sure that all motion detectors, perimeter alarms, glass breakage detectors and any other sort of home security device is properly installed exactly according to directions. If you don't have that "weekend warrior" spirit to do it yourself, you should either ask a friend who does or a home security professional to install it for you.

 

As long as you take a few precautions and take advantage of recent home security technology, you should be able to reap all the benefits of having a home alarm without the nuisance of false alarms.
