Cirrus Clouds What They are and What They Indicate
Cirrus clouds are found worldwide above an altitude of 5,000m. There will hardly be a day go by during the summer that some form of cirrus clouds will be spotted high in the sky. In winter cirrus clouds are still common, but are more likely to be obscured by low cloud cover. The latin word 'cirrus' means wisp of hair and can be likened to the high level cirrus clouds that stretch in delicate strands across the sky.
Cirrus clouds indicate the presence of moisture at high altitudes. At such altitudes moisture will freeze so the cirrus clouds are made up off millions of tiny ice crystals (approximately 0.05mm across) rather than water droplets. Upper level winds blow these ice crystals about and so produce the characteristic white streaks and wisps of cirrus clouds.
If the top of a large cumulonimbus cloud grows sufficiently to reach the tropopause and subsequently spreads out beneath the boundary of air that is less dense than itself then it forms the familiar anvil shape (or an 'incus') composed of ice crystals. This is a type of cirrus and when the storm has finally dissipated, the anvil, or incus, often remains.
Cirrus clouds may form in isolated patches or over a wide area of the sky, depending on the wind speeds at altitude and the distribution of moisture. Isolated patches of cirrus have little or no significance, but a large area of cirrus clouds will more likely indicate the approach of a weather front.
Cirrus is produced by the lifting of stable air, so as a weather front approaches the air rises and different types of cloud form in sequence as more & more moisture condenses. As cirrus is the last to form it represents pretty much the last of the available water vapour. Above cirrus clouds the air will be extremely dry.
Aircraft condensation trails, or 'contrails' are a form of artificial cirrus. Water vapour is produced by the jet's engines as part of the exhaust discharge. If the air is close to saturation the water vapour condenses at a distance behind the aircraft. Even though these contrails slowly dissipate, on the busier routes the contrails spread out and merge to form a layer of cirrus clouds.
Close to the core of a jet stream rising of air also occurs and condensation may take place. When this happens the location of the jet stream can be easily pinpointed by the cirrus clouds moving within it.
So cirrus are an important indicator of approaching weather systems, and although they are the last to form cirrus clouds are the first to be seen of an approaching weather system.

Cirrus Cloud $71.7 Cirrus clouds generally refer to atmospheric clouds that are characterized by thin, wisplike strands, often accompanied by tufts, leading to their common (nonstandard) name of mares tail. Sometimes these clouds are so extensive that they are virtually indistinguishable from one another, forming a sheet of cirrus called cirrostratus. Sometimes convection at high altitudes produces another form of cirrus called cirrocumulus, a pattern of small cloud tufts which include droplets of supercooled water. The term is also used for certain interstellar clouds composed of submicrometre sized dust grains. Many cirrus clouds produce hair like filaments made of the heavier ice crystals that precipitate from them. These fall streaks, a form of virga, often indicate the difference in the motion of air (wind shear) between the upper part of the cirrus cloud and the air below it. Sometimes the top of the cirrus cloud is moving rapidly above a slower layer of air, or the streak is falling into a faster moving lower layer. The directions of these winds can also vary.
