Money Belts are Varied and Important
Money belts are varied in their shapes and sizes and where they are placed on the body. Money belts are important because, unfortunately, pickpockets abound in some cities. It is crucial that you protect your money, credit cards, traveller's checks, passport, driver's license, itinerary, and any other valuables.
Flashing a wallet with a lot of cash is an invitation to being robbed, so you want to just present a modest amount of cash, enough to pay for a purchase. It is also wise to carry some of your cash and valuables in two different places in case you are unlucky enough to have one stolen. That way you have some extra cash while you wait for traveller's checks and other documents to be replaced.
The common trait of money belts is that they have a hidden compartment. You turn the belt inside out, unzip the compartment, put your documents inside, and zip it back up. An excellent idea is to get one with a "zipper security catch" that locks the zipper pull in place and makes it hard to open for a thief.
Some money belts are actually "pouches", are tied with a string, and are worn around the waist or neck. One problem with those worn around the neck is that they can be too obvious under clothes. Adjust it so that it hangs low enough to be in the stomach area rather than the chest area.
Another alternative is a leg pouch money belt. It straps around the calf just above the ankle. Some are attached with velcro and another is in the form of an elastic sock.
There are waterproof bum-bags available for when you go to the pool or beach.
The rear strap of a waist money belt is usually made of an easy-to-cut material (which pickpockets are well aware of, and they carry a knife or razor blade for that purpose). Look into getting one with steel cables that are sewn in and thus make that strap too difficult to cut.
Use a money belt and have peace of mind as you enjoy your travel.
