Second Hand Airbags, Does Your Insurance Cover You?

Does Your Online Car Insurance Quote Cover Second Hand Airbags?
Suddenly the motoring world is waking up to a new potential disaster, second hand airbags in cars involved in accidents may not operate and could result in fatalities and seriously affect your online car insurance quote.
Nobody has queried this seriously before but the sudden explosion in the sale of second hand airbags on the auction site eBAY has rung alarm bells.
In the space of one year sales on eBAY have doubled to 7,000 units p.a., the appeal of course is their price, which undercuts the manufacturers recommended retail price substantially.
Going to the top end of the car market, an airbag for a Ferrari 355 steering wheel would be, garage fitted, £1,600 + VAT with labour of approx £150 to be added; the eBAY price - £400.
On the surface there is nothing wrong with selling second hand items, but here we are talking about vital car safety devices which need to be precision fitted, is this right?
When you are applying for your online car insurance quote or renewing a policy, you as the driver, are under an obligation to inform your car insurance company of any changes or modifications to your vehicle, the mere fact you did not inform them of any changes, especially to safety equipment could invalidate your car insurance policy.
In the UK there is no regulating of the fitting of second hand airbags, new airbags are fitted into new cars following strict installation instructions with the correct tooling, there is no such control over the fitting of second hand airbags.
In Germany the law forbids the trade in second hand airbags, why is this not the case in the UK?
Strangely enough there are only 5 car manufacturers who make up 50% of the trade in airbags on eBAY and 2 of them are German, VW and BMW, the other 3 being Vauxhall, Renault and Ford.
Buying a second hand car can now pose more problems than previously from the point of view of safety airbags.
You now have to question that if a car you are considering buying has had damage repair you will need to enquire if it has had a replacement airbag and if so, has that airbag been fitted correctly, the onus, from the insurance point of view is on you , the purchaser to ascertain this.
At present there is no procedure in the UK for any authority to check the installation of second hand airbags, and that leaves every driver of a second hand car wandering if his new online car insurance quote will cover him/her if it is proved, following a later accident, that his car airbags were faulty, incorrectly fitted or were the wrong type for his vehicle.
Something needs to be done very quickly.
